One of our main missions here on the EMP website is to hit you with the info on the team first. Whether it's new singles, podcasts, free downloads, videos, etc - you want it, we've got it for you. Recently we decided it's time to introduce a new segment on the site, "Pon de Replay". For all you Rihanna fans who happen to stumble upon our site, sorry to disappoint, this has nothing to do with her. In these posts we'll be digging into our archives and taking you on a journey back in time. We'll be sharing our stories and giving you a chance to hear some things again maybe you haven't heard in a long time (if you've been down from the get) or a some dope older material you are hearing for the first time (thanks for joining party). Our first installment comes in podcast form from EMP head honcho, DJ K.O.
Radio was my (DJ K.O.) introduction to the music industry. Back in 2003-2004, I was a senior at Rutgers University and had my own show on WRSU-FM called "Beneath the Surface". The show originally aired every Tuesday & Friday morning from 6-10AM. Once I graduated and got a job, the show shifted to Thursday night / Friday morning airing from 12-2AM and Oracle joined the fray. Great times were had by many during that 2-3 year run. Met a lot of wonderful people, some of which I'm still close with today. During that time I was also working as a promoter for various venues in NYC (SOB's, BB Kings, etc.) and was able to connect with a lot of artists that way. I was green, but ambitious, back then. Eager to continue generating interest in my show, I decided to put my first mixtape together in 2004, Hub City Revival.
In an era with no music blogs, it was really just message boards/forums/chat rooms that were the means of internet promotion. This left a nice lane for mixtapes to still be a relevant means of promoting new music for artists back around this time. Using my connects from promoting events and the radio show, I was able to get first dibs on records before they were officially released from some rising stars of the time plus some local flavor. I was a huge fan of the Justus League and Low Budget at the time, so there was a heavy amount of records from those camps.
To set things off properly for HCR, I organized my first event ever (with the help of Pete Martinez) in March of 2004. It was a modest, yet successful start. We even got to hold it on campus at the Red Lion Cafe. Some artists who contributed records to the mixtape even came through from out of state like Kaimbr, Kenn Starr & Chaundon. We also had some of the local (NJ/NY) talent rock with us as well like Unstoppable Unity (the group Silent Knight began his career with). By the end of the night, I couldn't have asked for anything more - the show went smoothly, sold a grip of mixtapes (well, more accurately it was a MixCD - tapes hadn't been around for a few years) and had people in the area excited about my new movement. With the help of Aimee Flint, I was also able to get copies of the mixtape up for sale on (then) internet staples HipHopSite.com & Sandbox Automatic. All of this is what really gave me the confidence to a stab at the music industry.
Looking back, Hub City Revival is slightly embarrassing from a mix standpoint. But hey, you've got to start somewhere. Right?! Most of these songs ultimately found a home on their respective artists' releases after HCR was released in March of 2004. However, there are a few notable songs by Kaimbr & Oddisee that I don't believe ever saw the light of day after this mixtape. Hope you enjoy this mix.
